Ep. 275: The ZD Experience with Jason Dunigan

When a mother’s love and affirming words transcend life’s most difficult moments, they have the power to remind us that we’ve been walking a divine path all along.

Today’s conversation with Jason “Dunny” Dunigan reminded me why I love what I do. We actually began by reflecting on how our paths first crossed through Rochelle Riley and the Piccolo Spoleto Porch Concert Series, where Dunny and his wife, Sophie, helped bring music and community to their neighborhood.

From there, the conversation unfolded in the most beautiful and organic way. We talked about the healing process from hardships and trauma (including being one of the first first responders at the scene after the Emanuel 9 tragedy), and the love that led Dunny to believe Sophie was truly sent to him by God. We reflected on a mother’s affirming words, how they can outlive trauma, and how they can remind us that God has been directing our steps all along.

Of course, we honored his years of service and sacrifice as a firefighter and first responder, but what stayed with me was how his heart for service continues today. Through Mr. Narwhal’s Magnificent Snoballs, he’s intentionally creating moments of joy for families, especially those who may not always have the opportunity to experience them. Having been one who came from experiencing some of the hardest lived days of his life as a young man (living in his family’s car, group homes, scared straight programs, etc.) and also witnessing people during some of the hardest days of their lives, he now chooses to create spaces filled with smiles, connection, and hope.

Dunny, thank you for your service, your obedience, your vulnerability, and your commitment to loving this community in every season of your life. Your story is a beautiful reminder that purpose doesn’t end when one chapter closes—it simply finds new ways to serve.
