Journey of Return with Ann Caldwell

Journey of Return is a captivating blend of singing and storytelling that reflects my family’s journey from Denmark, SC, to Charleston and back again. Through a cappella music—ranging from spirituals to early R&B—and vivid narratives, it feels as intimate as sitting together on a porch or in a living room.

“The stories share glimpses of my relatives’ lives in Denmark and my immediate family’s experiences in Charleston, touching briefly on the realities of Jim Crow, civil rights, and segregation. With a mix of heartfelt history and humorous fiction—like the tale of Sister in the outhouse—the performance invites both reflection and laughter. Audience participation is encouraged, making this a shared journey through heritage, resilience, and community.”  – Ann Caldwell
